Abstract

Introduction: In intussusception or intestinal invagination, a part of the intestine and its mesentery invaginates into the lumen of an adjacent intestinal segment.

Objective: To present a case of intussusception in adults due to adenomatous polyp.

Case presentation: The case is presented of a 45-year-old female patient who underwent surgery for intestinal polyps and mechanical intestinal occlusion due to adhesions. She went to the emergency department of Hospital Militar Central Dr. Carlos J. Finlay with diffuse abdominal pain sometimes associated with vomiting and diarrhea. Physical examination revealed a palpable abdominal mass in the right iliac fossa. In the transversal section of the abdominal ultrasound, a target image was observed, together with the visualization of the image of intestine inside the intestine, which, due to its location, was compatible with an ileocolic invagination. In the simple abdominal tomography, a target image was observed, formed by the walls of the invaginating loop (terminal ileum), of the receiving loop (right colon) and of a hypodense content (liquid) inside both of them.

Conclusions: The imaging diagnosis of ileocolic invagination caused by an intestinal tumor was corroborated by surgery and its anatomopathological study proved to be an adenomatous polyp.
