Parathyroid Adenoma

Abstract

Introduction: Parathyroid adenoma is a noncancerous tumor of the parathyroid glands and increases parathormone levels, a hormone that regulates calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D levels in the blood and bones. Its classic triad is characterized by increased levels of parathormone, hypercalcemia and hypophosphatemia. This disease affects 1 in 500-1000 inhabitants and is the main cause of primary hyperparathyroidism in 80-85 % of patients.

Objective: To present the surgical treatment of a patient with primary hyperparathyroidism caused by parathyroid adenoma.

Case presentation: The case is presented of a 43-year-old female patient who went to the endocrinology department for general symptoms such as arthralgia, malaise, nausea and weight loss. She is there diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism originated by the presence of a parathyroid adenoma.

Conclusions: Parathyroid adenoma is the main cause of primary hyperparathyroidism in the world, in Cuba and in Cienfuegos. Its occurrence is very rare; therefore, its publication was considered of interest for the scientific personnel.
