Abstract

Introduction: Since its first description in 1926, unstable chest has generated considerable controversy due to its complex pathophysiology and other comorbidities associated with chest defects, which make it a challenge for the treating specialist.

Objective: To describe current aspects of the pathophysiology, classifications, and therapeutic options for unstable chest.

Methods: A descriptive narrative review was conducted from March to August 2023 using primary and secondary sources addressing the topic. The selection criteria for the articles examined were determined, among other things, by the objective of the review.

Development: Analgesia, pulmonary contusion, and fixation of the wobbly segment are the pillars of unstable chest treatment. A precise understanding and the guidelines for action derived from them will largely define the morbidity and survival of patients with this condition.

Conclusions: The low incidence and high mortality rate make it necessary to frequently review and update knowledge on the subject. Early osteosynthesis techniques are increasingly used when surgical treatment is necessary.
