Abstract

Introduction. Acute surgical abdomen, an important health problem for older adults, is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in the world, Latin America and Cuba.

Method. An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out; of 2,708 patients admitted to the General Surgery service of the "Vladimir Ilich Lenin" General University Hospital in the province of Holguín with the diagnosis of acute abdominal conditions, during the years 2012 and 2022.

Goals. To analyze the behavior of acute surgical abdomen in older adults.

Results Admissions in older adult patients with acute surgical abdomen were analyzed; occlusive syndrome was the most represented, caused by abdominal wall hernias. Cholecystitis was the main cause of peritoneal symptoms, with sepsis causing the greatest number of complications.

Conclusions: Surgical acute abdomen in the elderly does not have a high mortality.
