Abstract

Introduction: Aphorisms are useful in teaching, assistance, research and ethical activities; therefore, they have been used in different contexts and there is an aspiration for them to be also used in the area of surgical specialties.

Objective: To present useful aphorisms for the knowledge of surgical specialties and to stimulate their use.

Methods: A narrative and systematic review was carried out based on the search and review of 180 medical aphorisms, selected after an extensive search in Google Scholar, SciELO and Pubmed. Twenty-five aphorisms were selected that responded to daily aspects of the surgeon's life, as well as inserted in seven subthemes with the characteristics of being useful in surgical care, teaching, research and medical ethics.

Development: Based on the selected topics, the aphorisms were inserted identifying their author, rationale and current validity.

Conclusions: The study and use of historical aphorisms allowed understanding the history and different processes that have accompanied the best performance
