Primary Hyperparathyroidism Associated with Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma
Keywords:
primary hyperparathyroidism; parathyroidectomy; papillary thyroid cancerAbstract
Introduction: Primary hyperparathyroidism is caused by excessive secretion of parathyroid hormone by one or more parathyroid glands. Solitary parathyroid adenoma is the cause in approximately 80% of patients, with the remainder mainly due to multiple adenomas, hyperplasia, and, rarely, carcinomas.
Objective: To present the case of a male patient affected by primary hyperparathyroidism associated with papillary thyroid carcinoma.
Case presentation: We present the case of a 22-year-old male patient with elevated serum calcium and parathyroid hormone levels and decreased serum phosphorus, associated with osteolytic manifestations. As this is a rare combination of conditions, it is considered of scientific interest to publish the case for the benefit of professionals involved in the study and treatment of surgical conditions of the neck.
Conclusions: The classic and symptomatic form of hyperparathyroidism in young male patients with concomitant papillary thyroid carcinoma is uncommon. In these cases, the combination of surgical techniques for resection of both glands is justified.
