Abstract

Introduction: Abnormalities of the umbilical cord in newborns are common, occurring in up to 2% of the general population. Among these anomalies is the umbilical or vitelline fistula, which occurs when the omphalomesenteric duct remains patent.

Objective: To present a patient with an omphalomesenteric fistula, given the low incidence of this clinical anomaly.

Case presentation: An eight-month-old male infant was brought to the clinic because of exposed intestinal mucosa at the navel, which was pale red, moist, and had aerated intestinal secretions. The persistence and permeability of the omphalomesenteric duct was demonstrated, confirming the diagnosis of vitelline fistula. Surgery was performed with favorable results.

Conclusions: Umbilical or vitelline fistula is rare, so there is consensus among pediatricians, surgeons, and physicians in general that it should be studied so that it can be diagnosed in a timely manner.
