Abstract

Introduction: Acquired pulmonary hernias are mainly caused by trauma and chest injuries and, less frequently, by coughing fits.

Objective: To present the case of a patient with a history of chest trauma and chronic coughing complicated by a pulmonary hernia.

Case presentation: A 57-year-old male patient with a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and recurrent coughing who received cardiopulmonary resuscitation after syncope. He came to the clinic because of a fluctuating bulge in the left subscapular region, related to breathing movements, which was diagnosed as a left pulmonary hernia. He underwent surgery for primary closure of the chest wall and hernioplasty with synthetic prosthetic material.

Conclusions: In the presence of a reducible volume increase in the chest wall and in patients with a history of trauma or chronic cough, pulmonary hernia should always be suspected, despite its rarity. Immediate surgical intervention should be performed before serious complications arise.
