Introduction: Thymomas are epithelial tumors originating in the thymus gland, with an incidence of 0.13 cases per 100,000 inhabitants per year, and most commonly occurring between the ages of 40 and 60.
Objective: To present the main aspects of the treatment of a patient with micronodular thymoma at Dr. Miguel Enríquez University Hospital.
Case Presentation: A 46-year-old female patient with no significant past medical history reported weight loss, fatigue, and shortness of breath that had persisted for two weeks. She was initially diagnosed with Oropouche fever, but her clinical symptoms worsened without improvement, and she developed a cough with whitish sputum and retrosternal tightness; one month later, she underwent a chest X-ray and surgical evaluation. In the general surgery department, laboratory and imaging tests were ordered; a mediastinal tumor was suspected, and she underwent conventional thymectomy. The biopsy report confirmed the diagnosis of a thymoma.
Conclusions: The definitive diagnosis is generally established through postoperative histopathological examination; computed tomography (CT), with or without percutaneous biopsy, is the gold standard for preoperative diagnosis.
