Abstract

Introduction: If there is one profession where the refinement of a procedure is the result of the work of several generations, it is surgery, all with the desire to seek greater effectiveness.

Objective: To explore the different historical events that led to the development of the Roux-en-Y surgical technique without cutting.

Methods: The study used a logical-historical approach to the events that led to the development of this surgical technique, reviewing a total of 75 articles on different platforms. Only 30 were selected, which constitute the bibliographic references for the review, whose main sources were PubMed, Medline, and the Cuban Journal of Surgery.

Development: Currently, the most widely used procedure for intestinal reconstruction after total gastrectomy is the no-cut Roux-en-Y, and to identify its background, historical research was conducted to find the relevant events that preceded it.

Conclusions: There are six highly significant historical events that demonstrate that the road to no-cut Roux-en-Y reconstruction has been a long one.
