Abstract

Introduction: Thyroid nodules pose a diagnostic challenge when it comes to differentiating between malignant and benign nodules and determining surgical access.

Objective: To determine the concordance between the results of the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio and the histopathological study in the diagnosis of thyroid cancer.

Methods: An analytical and cross-sectional study was conducted using information from patients who underwent thyroid surgery in 2022 and 2023 at the Guillermo Domínguez Hospital in Puerto Padre. The variables age, sex, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, and histological result were analyzed. The concordance of the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio with respect to the histological study was determined. The information was stored and processed in a Microsoft Excel database.

Results: Females predominated, with papillary carcinoma being the most common diagnosis. The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio had a Youden index of 83.8 with an ABC of 89.6% and a Kappa index of 76.5, showing good agreement with the histological study.

Conclusions: In the diagnostic study of thyroid cancer, the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio is useful for confirming cancer when other evidence also points to the disease.
