Abstract

Introduction: Rectal endoscopic ultrasound is a diagnostic study that provides objective information on the evaluation of anorectal lesions, as well as a significant diagnostic test that helps in therapeutic decision-making, treatment monitoring, and effectiveness evaluation.

Objective: To present endoscopic ultrasound findings in patients with anorectal lesions.

Methods: A descriptive, retrospective study was conducted using theoretical and diagnostic research methods to study 242 patients with anorectal lesions referred to the Institute of Gastroenterology of Cuba for rectal endoscopic ultrasound.

Results: 5.7% of patients were aged 60 years or older, and there was a predominance of females (62.8%) over males (37.2%). Rectal endoscopic ultrasound mainly revealed oncological lesions (83.9%), the most frequent of which was the initial staging of rectal adenocarcinoma (36.8%); and among benign diseases (22.3%), Crohn's inflammatory bowel disease (7.4%). Among the malignant findings (40.9%), 24% of those affected by rectal adenocarcinoma presented a pattern three on qualitative elastography.

Conclusions: Endoscopic ultrasound is a diagnostic study that should be performed on all patients with anorectal lesions, especially if malignancy is suspected, in order to achieve comprehensive and personalized care for different patient groups.
