Experimental Unilateral Lung Transplantation
Keywords:

Experimental surgery on animals between 1987 and 1988 was a long-standing practice that contributed to the development of surgery at the Dr. Miguel Enríquez University Hospital and the National Center for Agricultural Health. These institutions carried out an interesting collaborative effort to train a surgical team to perform organ transplants. The study aimed to demonstrate the opportunities offered by teamwork to refine a surgical procedure by taking advantage of the possibilities of experimental surgery. A total of 68 animals were used, and 34 unilateral left lung transplants were performed. The first four pigs that underwent surgery died within the first few hours. Beginning with the fifth procedure, 30 animals survived the ten days following the operation, and twelve pigs reached 31 days, at which point they were euthanized, as established in the research protocol. No immunosuppressive drugs were used. Histopathological studies were performed on all deceased pigs. This retrospective study demonstrates that, in order to refine the surgical technique for unilateral left lung transplantation, it is necessary to conduct an experimental phase in animals.
