Abstract

Introduction: Intestinal anastomosis is one of the essential pillars of gastrointestinal surgery and a significant source of problems due to its complications.

Objective: To characterize patients who underwent intestinal suturing at the Leopoldito Martínez General Teaching Hospital.

Methods: A prospective, descriptive, observational, longitudinal study was conducted with 32 patients who underwent intestinal anastomosis between December 2024 and September 2025. Hypothesis testing was performed using a contingency table (4 x 2), the chi-square test, and the computer-assisted bootstrap method.

Results: In the total study population, males accounted for   62.4%, and the age group over 70 years old accounted for 37.5%. Cardiovascular risk factors were identified in 42.42% of the patients. The end-to-end surgical technique was performed in 29 patients (90.62%), and the enteric anastomosis was performed in 24 patients (75%). Paralytic ileus was identified as a postoperative complication in 28% of the patients. 65.62% of the patients were discharged alive.

Conclusions: End-to-end enteric intestinal anastomosis is the most frequently performed surgical technique at this institution to restore the anatomical and physiological integrity of the digestive system.
