Introduction: Complex biliary tract stenosis at the perihilar level poses a surgical challenge and is associated with high morbidity and mortality.
Objective: To determine the morbidity and mortality associated with complex perihilar stenosis in the General Surgery Department at Manuel Ascunce Domenech University Hospital.
Methods: A descriptive, prospective, observational study was conducted with patients admitted to the General Surgery Department with a diagnosis of stenosis at the confluence of the hepatic ducts from September 2018 to January 2023. The study population consisted of ten patients who met the inclusion criteria. Descriptive statistical methods and percentage calculations were used.
Results: The majority of patients were male (70%). Benign stenoses (60%)—type III according to the Bismuth classification—predominated, as did the Kasai procedure with the use of an endoprosthesis, and bile leakage (30%) as a complication. Eighty percent of patients were discharged alive following curative surgery.
Conclusions: Most patients were male; benign strictures of type III according to the Bismuth classification and biliary leakage as a complication were the most frequent findings. A live discharge status was predominant among all patients.
