Abstract

Introduction: Buttock augmentation aims at achieving a more youthful appearance and silhouette; as well as creating the ideal proportion between waist and hip. This can be achieved by lipoinjection; however, in this case, there are controversies regarding the viability of the grafted tissue and fat survival.

Objective: To determine the percentage of autologous fat graft survival and its relationship to the volume injected in patients undergoing gluteal lipotransfer.

Methods: An observational, descriptive, longitudinal and prospective study was conducted with a sample of 44 patients who underwent gluteal lipotransfer in the plastic surgery service at Hospital Docente Clínico Quirúrgico Dr. Miguel Enríquez in the period from March 2018 to June 2021.

Results: The study shows that, by means of ultrasound and formulas, the average volume and height of buttock fat is doubled in the mid-postoperative period and decreases in the late postoperative period, without reaching the preoperative values. In addition, nearly half of the autologous fat volume grafted into the buttocks was established to survive definitively in the late postoperative period. Furthermore, the relationship between infiltrated volume and autologous fat graft survival was established to be inversely proportional: the greater the volume, the lower its survival.

Conclusions: Only half of the volume of autologous fat grafted into the buttocks survives definitively, and fat survival is inversely proportional to the infiltrated volume.
