Abstract

Introduction: Lung decortication is a procedure that involves removing granulation tissue and/or the fibrous layer covering the visceral pleura of the lung to allow the lung to expand.

Objective: To present a patient who underwent lung decortication for chronic pleural empyema.

Case presentation: A 35-year-old male patient was diagnosed with chronic pleural empyema resulting from community-acquired pneumonia without adequate treatment. He underwent surgery to perform decortication of the right lung.

Conclusions: Lung decortication is the treatment of choice for pleural empyema in the organized stage. The timeliness of the procedure directly influences postoperative complications in each patient.
